Pelikan Toledo M700 Black Fountain Pen
The Pelikan Toledo M700 Black Fountain Pen is a Souverän with a sleeve of solid sterling silver, worked through several stages and plated in 24k gold, then engraved by hand. The tiny cuts are done by hand, so no two Toledos are quite alike. Pelikan first made the Toledo in 1931, following the damascening tradition of the Spanish city it is named after.
Under the sleeve it is a Pelikan piston filler with a green ink window, and the cap and ends are black resin. The 18k gold nib has rhodium decoration and comes in Extra Fine, Fine, Medium or Broad.
To see it in person, visit us at 25 Bellair in Yorkville, or book an appointment. Read more in our Pelikan brand feature.
Why we love it
"Some pens you buy to write with. The Pelikan M700 Toledo you buy because it's a small miracle that it exists at all. Pelikan reintroduced the Toledo in 1986 with the M700, and the production process has barely changed since: gold film pressed onto a sterling silver barrel, the motif etched entirely by hand, each pen signed by the craftsman who made it. No more than 200 leave the workshop each month, which tells you everything about the level of care involved. This is the kind of object that makes you slow down — and that's before you've even uncapped it"
