Mother Knows Best

This Mother’s Day, we are honouring the treasured exchanges and lasting memories our mothers have given us, while opening a space for our customers to do the same.

Between May 1st and May 10th, when you walk into our shop, you will see a community pin board, a stack of cards, and a pen. You will be encouraged to write down the best piece of advice your mother has given you and pin it on the board. We hope that over time, this board will become a place of solace for customers, as they can read through the countless pieces of advice from other families in the community, and walk away with a renewed perspective.

All submissions will be added to a random draw for a $50 Laywine's gift card!

Mother’s Day is the kind of holiday that sneaks up on you. One of the real markers that Spring is in full swing, and Summer is just around the corner. It is a time of flower bouquets, walks in the park, and the mad scramble to find the perfect card for that Sunday morning. 

Mother’s Day does not feel like a heavy gift-giving holiday, because mothers often give us gifts that are not exactly physical. We have all asked our mothers what they want for their birthday, only to hear “nothing,” or the dreaded, “I just want you to be happy.” 

The exchange between a child and their mother is usually not about gifts at all, but about words of love, encouragement, and lasting wisdom. We hope our board will be the beginning of a habit among our staff and customers, a habit of appreciating those around us and preserving all they have given us.

This is something we hope to achieve not just during Mother’s Day, but always. We sell pens and paper, but they are so much more than that. Holding a handwritten note from your mother – seeing her looping handwriting, the yellowing edges of the paper, breathing in its scent – will always mean more than reviewing a text she had sent you. There is something very human about the tactile, the analogue. Through our community pin board, we hope to drive home the importance of passing wisdom from one generation to the next.

If you are not able to join us in-store, we have an alternative for you. You can fill out this online form, and our staff will handwrite your contribution and pin it on the board.
