Peter Laywine
Founder
Peter opened Laywine’s in 1987 and has been championing fountain pens, notebooks, and all things analogue ever since. He’s the person people turn to when they want to find the right pen—or when they’re not quite sure what they’re looking for. He believes that good tools make everyday writing a little more enjoyable, and that there’s always room for another ink colour. These days he’s in the shop a little less, but his love of great pens—and great jazz—still shapes everything we do.

"Kaweco always told us the Raw Aluminum wouldn't keep its mirror-like finish for very long. It would mark up and patina because the aluminum is only polished and not protected. I decided to take one for myself a few months ago. It looks great! Yes, the aluminum is not the way it was on Day One, but I like it better. And the rollerball pen takes a standard Parker-style refill, so replacements -- and options -- are easy to find!"

"I have resolved to try every notebook in the store (I'm taking one for the team!) I started the new year with a B5 Composition book from Leuchtturm, and so far I love it! The Table of Contents at the front will be really helpful as I fill up the book."

"When we sell any Caran d'Ache ballpoints, we always talk about the Goliath: how it has an 8,000 m write-out which should cover 600 A4 pages, single-spaced, double-sided. And it's the smoothest ballpoint refill I've every used."

"We look for products that are functional and beautiful. This chess set is both! The board and box are handmade in Paris from leather, and pieces are laquered wood. When designers want a premium board game made by hand, they turn to Hectore Saxe."
