Introducing Wingback at Laywine’s: Pens, Pencils, and More

Why We Brought Wingback to Laywine’s
Every so often, I come across a brand that feels like it was designed with Laywine’s customers in mind. Wingback is one of those discoveries.
I first encountered them in London, where I had the chance to visit their studio. What struck me immediately was the balance they’ve achieved between tradition and technology. At first glance, Wingback products look reassuringly simple — mechanical pens, pencils, and fountain pens. But when you take a closer look, you realise that their simplicity is intentional, the result of stripping away everything unnecessary until only the essential remains.
When I first discovered Wingback, I couldn’t wait to share it with Peter. Over a call, I told him about their design philosophy and the integrity of what they were making. Later, when I was next in Canada, I brought along the pieces I’d been using — and Peter was immediately impressed by the design, the engineering, and the overall quality. It confirmed what I already felt: Wingback would be a natural fit for Laywine’s.
Tradition Made with Technology
Wingback uses advanced engineering techniques — CNC machining, aerospace-grade materials, and precision finishing — to create goods that feel timeless. It’s an approach that resonates deeply with us at Laywine’s: marrying the craft of traditional tools with the possibilities of modern technology. The result is something that feels both familiar and forward-thinking.
Designed and Made in the UK
Another reason Wingback fits so naturally into our assortment is their commitment to manufacturing in the UK. There’s something grounding about knowing that every piece is designed and manufactured by a small team of people who care about quality as much as we do. It means fewer compromises and more integrity in the final product.
What We’ve Chosen for Laywine’s
For our first Wingback collection, we’ve focused on the essentials:
  • Mechanical Pen in Brass and Black Steel
  • Mechanical Pencil in both 0.7mm and 0.9mm, in Brass and Black Steel
  • Fountain Pen in Brass and Black Steel
  • Pen Slip and Pen Sleeves to carry them in
Each piece feels deliberate, made to last and to be used daily. They’re not ornamental objects, but tools designed to earn their place in your pocket or on your desk.
I’ve been using one of the Wingback fountain pens myself for the past six months, and it’s quickly become a daily companion. It’s compact and convenient enough to carry everywhere, while the Bock nib delivers a smooth and reliable writing experience. It’s one of those rare pens that feels both rugged and refined, perfectly at home in my pocket as much as on my desk.
A Brand Story We Believe In
What sealed the decision for me was visiting Wingback’s studio. Meeting the team and seeing the process firsthand gave me an appreciation for their story: a young London design house building objects that are meant to be used, carried, and kept. There’s no gimmickry, just thoughtful design and honest execution.
Bringing Wingback into Laywine’s is about more than adding another brand to the shelves. It’s about continuing our mission to curate the finest tools for writing and living — those objects that enrich daily rituals through their design, their materials, and the stories they carry.
Peter and I are proud to introduce Wingback to our community, and we hope you’ll enjoy discovering them as much as we did.
All the best,
Gareth
