This cover design is based on Shigesato Itoi’s 1989 Famicom game MOTHER (EarthBound Beginnings in North America). The design matches the groundbreakingly simple original cover of the game, with a large golden logo over a red background. The design stood out compared to standard game boxes of its day, and its appeal has only grown over the years.

The back of the cover is bright red with a simple, pared down design. It’s pressed with the logos of the Hobonichi Mother Project and Hobonichi. This beautiful design encapsulates the feeling of new beginnings in the MOTHER series, which over time would branch into games that captured the hearts of a diverse audience across generations. The book spine is foil-pressed in gold with the year 2024 and the HON logo for easy reference when placed in your bookshelf alongside other books.

As a free bonus, this cover includes a pack of 12 clear MOTHER 2 stickers of various sizes. You can place these stickers somewhere on your techo, or on whichever belonging you’d like to stick some on! The sticker is fade-resistant and slightly water repellant, so you could also put it on a suitcase.

The back of the book has informational pages, including An Interview with Myself, Seasonal Sweets to Make at Home, and Caring for Your Eyes. The book uses thin and light yet durable Tomoe River S paper. The paper has supported the Hobonichi Techo for over 20 years with its special characteristics, but it’ll be undergoing an overhaul starting with the 2024 edition techos. The paper is more resistant to bleed through, lighter despite being almost the same thickness, and has a crisper surface by adjusting the fibers of the paper.

As a special exclusive only for the HON, this techo comes with a pencil board. The board is A6 size and clear, with 5mm grid lines printed across it. There are measurements printed along one side in 1mm increments, which allow for use as a ruler. This is also a new type of pencil board, as it has a pen holder attached to it where users can store pens by their clips.
